A story full of adventure
- Kopcem, a young hunter, whose mother Niana was tragically killed in a swamp by a wild aurochs, is the main character. After the ritual burial a sequence of events unfolds that are bound to change the young hunter’s whole life. Together with his brave companion Chipmunk and other members of the Vestonice tribe they go through an elevating experience of a wild beast hunting the mammoths, which however, fades away quickly and which unexpectedly leads to a tragic conflict with an alien hunt tribe.
- The decimated tribe of Vestonice is now forced to leave their territory. Not only that they lose their campsite, but also the vitally important fire without which they are put at the mercy of weather and attacks of wild beasts.
- With winter approaching the group starts to fall apart. A series of serious disputes over the leadership prompts Roughneck (one of the most important tribal hunters) to leave them. Soon it comes out that he also betrayed the tribe. Joining a hostile band he ambushes Kopcem group and kidnaps one of the young girls named Weasel with whom Kopcem was in love a long time before.
- Mammothy is named a tribal leader because of his wits and bravery he has shown in a cruel nightly fight with a cave bear. In spite of his youth, Kopcem also proves to be an honored member of his clan; he wins the credit of other members and is appointed the role of a fire keeper.
- After an unexpected disaster and another unfortunate loss, the weakened tribe is now forced to take another risk. Their new leader Mammothy together with his companion take courage to steal back the fire they have been deprived of and bring back Weasel, the kidnapped girl. They succeed in sneaking into the enemy camp and getting the fire back, but sadly, Weasel doesn’t want to go back with them. This is because in the meanwhile she fell in love with Snake, a hunter, and the alien group became her new home.
- Kopcem and Mammothy return to the camp without her. Surprisingly enough, Roughneck, who has not been admitted by the enemy band to become their member, comes back soon, as wandering alone he would have no chance to survive in harsh conditions. The tribe forgives him and allows him to take back his place among hunters. Unexpectedly, the tribal life, as well as the mutual relationships, turn back for the better again.
- Towards the end of the story, the prehistoric boy finds out that he has been blind all the time through, not having noticed that another girl from the tribe – fragile Froggie – has been in love with him all the time long. Struck by a sudden infatuation he decides to make a wooden button for her so that she could wrap herself up in winter. When rubbing a piece of wood to make a little hole in it, he incidentally discovers a wonderful thing – FIRE.
